Rowena Bella Spencer
24 August 1888 --- 13 October 1918

The funeral of Miss Rowena Spencer will be held this afternoon and the remains laid at rest in Rose Hill cemetery. Miss Spencer died of pneumonia at Iowa City, where she was nursing and had exhausted her strength on strenuous duty. Her death occurred on Sunday, October 13, 1918. Miss Spencer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Spencer, formerly of this city, where Mr. Spencer, was roadmaster for 19 years, coming here in 1888. Of late Mr. Spencer has been engaged in superintending government ship building in West Philadelphia, Pa., and Hog Island.

Rowena Spencer was born in Eagle Grove, August 21, 1888. She was graduated from our public school with the class of 1907. She graduated from the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago, where she served in the children's ward. She had been head nurse in the University hospital at Iowa City for nearly three years. At the time of her death she was a Red Cross nurse and was awaiting her call when the epidemic broke out at Iowa City. Mr. and Mrs. Spencer and Mr. and Mrs John Tyke were with her at the time of her death. It may truthful be said that she sacrificed her life for others.
