Death of Gertie Yoakam
Like lightning from a cloudless sky the sad news was borne to this city by wire Friday evening that
Miss Gertie Yoakam was dead. She was one of the brightest members of the class of '95 and had
just crossed the threshold of a life of usefulness as a teacher. She commenced her term of school in
the Finn district, about 5 miles east of Belmond, about 3 weeks ago and was meeting with flattering
success in every particular when summoned home. She was taken ill Friday morning and died at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Her remains arrived on the 4:56 p.m. M. C. & F. D. train Saturday and the funeral was held in the M.E. Church Sunday at 2 p. m. and was conducted by Rev. Radford, of the Congregational Church after which all that was mortal of this estimable young lady was layed at rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. Words are powerless to express the many kind and lovable traits of the deceased, for to know her was to respect her. She was one of those calm, pure and honest girls that one often meets whose very presence makes one better—the idol of her parents and the favorite of all. But she has gone and may the God who doeth all things well, heal the hearts of relatives and friends with the balm of Hope, which promises another meeting beyond the skies.
