Maxine G. Umstead

Maxine G. Umstead, 81, of Eagle Grove, died Saturday, December 6, 2003, at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Goldfield.

She was born October 7, 1922 in Woolstock Township, the daughter of Roy and Geneva C. (Lewis) Sanders. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, attending rural schools, and graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1940. Maxine then graduated from Kalher Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She worked in a Florida Hospital for a few years before entering the United States Army and serving as an Army nurse during World War II. Maxine served on the first ship into Tokyo, Japan; the "Baton Death March." On August 10, 1947, she married Paul R. Umstead at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. They made their home in Eagle Grove where Maxine worked first as an assistant then became the school nurse for the Eagle Grove Schools for over 23 years. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and quilting.

She is survived by her daughter Sandy Wheatley and husband, Phil, of Cedar Rapids; a son, Mike Umstead and wife, Ann, of Perry, Okla.; four grandchildren: Kristin Willimack, Scott Wheatley, Mike Umstead, and Michelle Umstead; three great-grandchildren: Bradley, Ryan and Nathan Willimack; and a brother, Delmar Sanders and wife, Marjorie, of Eagle Grove.

Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of the arrangements.
