KATHRYN A. UMSTEAD

Kathryn A. Helbach was born March 18, 1921, at Clarion, Iowa, the daughter of Anthony and Walsie Francis Helbach.

She was educated in the Goldfield schools and graduated in the class of 1939.

On January 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leroy Umstead of Eagle Grove at Goldfield.

The couple made their home in Eagle Grove, where Kathryn worked at the U. S. Post Office for two years, and the Security Savings Bank of Eagle Grove, for 12 years. She was a partner in the Umstead Livestock Auction business in, Eagle Grove with her husband.

Kathryn was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove, president of Beta Sigma Phi, treasurer of Senior Citizens; and active in Meals on Wheels.

Kathryn A. Umstead, died at the Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, on April 8, 1989, while recovering from heart surgery. At the time of her death, she was 68 years, and 20 days of age. She was preceded, in death by her parents; two sisters, Allene Hudson and Emogene Wilson, and an infant brother; William Charles.

She is survived.by her husband, Leroy, of Eagle, Grove; two sons, William, Albert City, Minn.; Monte, Eagle Grove; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Joan) Elberg, Eagle Grove; and Mrs. Dean (Jeanne) Spangler, Rocky Mount, N. C.; one brother, Doyle Helbach, Naples, Idaho; and a sister, Mrs. Loren (Alison) McIntyre, Bentonville, Ark.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Scott C. Hall, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove, officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
