6 September 1863 ---- 20 October 1934

Gabriel H. Vorland was born of parents Helge and Elizabeth Vorland, Sept. 6, 1863, at Fenaas, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bømlo church, Fenaas, [Hordaland] Norway, and united in marriage in that same church to Dorothy Nelson, March 16, 1887. He and his wife migrated to Story City, Iowa, May 2, 1890, where they were occupied in business, and resided there for 11 years. In 1901 they moved to Slater, Iowa, and in 1919 to Eagle Grove where they resided until his death, Oct. 20, 1934, at the age of 71 years, one month and 14 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, two brothers, Nels Vorland of Eagle Grove and Peder Vorland of Kragero, Norway; and one sister, Anna Kanek of Oslo, Norway. One brother and three sisters preceded him in death. Some over a month ago, Mr. Vorland became ill and since that time has been confined to his bed. But he did not suffer from any pains, and on last Saturday at 1:30 p. m., passed away unexpectedly and suddenly. God gave him a peaceful departure.

Mr. Vorland was of a peaceful, dependable and friendly character, who therefore had many friends, and, will be greatly missed in his community.

In his early manhood, he experienced a spiritual awakening. He passed from spiritual death to spiritual life in Christ Jesus and accepted Him as his personal Saviour and found peace and true joy in Him. Tills was the greatest and most glorious experience in his life. He became a child of God through faith in Christ Jesus. By the gracious work of the Holy Spirit, salvation in Christ was revealed unto him. Ever since that time, he enjoyed fellowship with God, and he lived a Christian life consistent with his experience and confession of Christ. After his conversion it did not take him long before he found his place among God's people, whom he loved and worked with for the furtherance of God's Kingdom. For the last 30 years of his life he was a faithful member and worker of the Central Iowa Inner Mission and of which mission he was a treasurer for about 21 years, and a member of the board of that mission for about 18 years.

For the last 14 years of his life he was a faithful member of the Samuel Lutheran congregation of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and was a deacon in this congregation for 12 years. Mr. Vorland is greatly missed in his home, for he was a kind, loving and true husband, and he is missed in the congregation and in the Inner-Mission work, but we do not wish him back, for he has gone to his eternal rest. He has fought the good fight and won the victory. May God rise up others to fill the declining rank of the pioneer laymen.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and at the West Side Lutheran church, conducted by Rev H. S. Fauske. Burial was made at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
