James B. Van Houten was born September 26,1906, the son of George and Effie Duesler Van Houten, in Humboldt County. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system. He enlisted in the U. S. Army April 21, 1942, at Fort Des Moines, and after service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, received his honorable discharge in 1945. He worked as a farm tiler for many years and in later years was employed by Halverson Trenching of Eagle Grove.

He was united in marriage to Bertha Thompson Hill of Eagle Grove. They made their home in Eagle Grove. She died November 14, 1959.

James B. Van Houten died July 28, 1991, at the Clarion Care Center in Clarion at the age of 84 years, 10 months and two days. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife. He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Cecil (Kathryn) Wyatt, Eagle Grove, and a sister-in-law, Bea Butz of Eagle Grove.

Funeral services were held at the gravesite August 1 in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. The Rev. James Seibert of the Goldfield United Methodist Church officiated at the 10 a.m. services. Kastler-Babcock Services, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
