Melvin Junior Umstead was born February 17, 1927, the son of Raymond and Katherine Olson Umstead at Eagle Grove. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served on the U.S.S. South Dakota during World War II. He received his honorable discharge in 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class.
He was united in marriage to Elvira Fischer of Woolstock on December 23, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple repeated their vows of marriage on May 30, 1980 at their home in Eagle Grove. Father Norman White of Sacred Heart Church, officiated at the ceremony.
Mr. Umstead worked for Wilson Produce in Eagle Grove before becoming employed with the C.N.&W. Railroad, and later with Wright County Maintenance, as well as various other jobs.
Melvin Junior Umstead died October 4, 1992 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion following an extended illness. He had attained the age of 65 years, seven months and 17 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Marvin. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Connie of Red Bluff, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. O.E. "Bud" (Lucille) Smith of Dunn Loring, Va.; and Mrs. Arthur (Viola) Stockseth of Belmond.
Funeral services were held October 7 at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. The Rev. Wayne Droessler of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove, officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
