Raymond Umstead, son of John and Sarah Umstead, was born August 15, 1892, at Danville, Pa., where he also attended school. On October 27, 1917, he was united in marriage with Katherine Olson at Goldfield. They farmed in the Goldfield area until 1924, when they moved to Eagle Grove. Raymond worked for the Chicago North Western Railroad for six years. He then worked as a foreman for Wilson & Co., Eagle Grove, until his retirement at the age of 65.

Raymond died Thursday August 31, 1978, at the Belmond Hospital at the age of 86. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Sam and his son Marvin. Survivors include his wife; one son, Melvin of Eagle Grove; two daughters: Lucille (Mrs. Edwin) Smith of Dunn Loring, Va. and Viola (Mrs. Art) Stockseth of Belmond; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 2 at Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home, Eagle Grove. Rev. Paul Jackson officiated and burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
