Funeral services for Laura S. Johnson, age 82 of Eagle Grove, were held on Tues., Jan. 22, 1985, at 1:30 p.m. in the Severtson Chapel of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul Schaedig, church pastor, officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held on Monday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.

Laura Selina Johnson, the daughter of Lars and Sady Christenson Johnson, was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa on August 28,1902.

She received her early education in Eagle Grove, graduating from high school in 1921. She attended the University of Illinois, the State College of Colorado and received her B.A. Degree in History and Education from the University of Iowa in 1942. She had 30 hours credit of graduate work towards her Masters degree from the University of Iowa and Drake University in Des Moines.

Miss Johnson began a 46 year teaching career as an elementary teacher in a Wright County rural school, where she taught for two years. She was on the faculty of Ware and Havelock schools, joining the Ottumwa schools in 1929. She retired from the Ottumwa schools in June of 1968 and returned to Eagle Grove to make her home with her sister, Mrs. H.D. Talmage.

Laura was a life member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church and upon her retirement was given a life membership in the Iowa State Education Association. She was a member of the Ottumwa Education Assoc. and the Wapello County Education Association; the Alumni Association of the University of Iowa; the American Association of University Women and Curriculum Committee of the Ottumwa Schools.

In her church she had taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was a member of the choir, Luther League and Young Womens Mission Society.

During WWII, she assisted in issuing ration books, worked at the U.S.O. and supervised the Victory Gardens of the pupils in her school. For 25 years she was a volunteer member of the Canteen Group of the American Red Cross in Ottumwa and the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa.

Laura Selina Johnson died early Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 1985 at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 21 days.

She is survived by a sister, Lettie, Mrs. H.D. Talmage of Eagle Grove; a brother, James O. Johnson of Miami, Fla.; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Marie Nelson; and three brothers, Lewis, John and Arthur.
