William Henry Cooper
4 July 1822 ---- 14 August 1917

OBITUARY OF W. H. COOPER

Wm. Henry Cooper was born at Lancaster, England July 4th, 1822. He died at his home in Eagle Grove, on North Lincoln Street, August 14th, aged 95 years, 1 month and 10 days. Mr. Cooper moved with his parents from England to Canada in 1827 and to New York State in 1839. A few years later he came to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, working at his trade there and in Chicago. He spent considerable of his time hunting and trapping, which industry was very profitable at that time. He was married to Miss Louisa Jane Hall at Cedar Rapids, on December 25th, 1855. To this union were born eight children, four dying in childhood and two have died since reaching maturity, Mrs. Daniel Hopkins dying in 1892 and Mrs. George Waddell in 1911. The deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Walter Irwin of Council Hill, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Ralph Fisher who resides northeast of Eagle Grove. Fifteen grandchildren survive and eight great grandchildren.

Enlists in Army.
In the fall of 1862, Mr. Cooper enlisted with Co. H, 6th Iowa Volunteer cavalry. He was sent to help
stamp out the Sioux Indian uprising of which the Spirit Lake massacre was a part. He was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of 1st sergeant. His service for his country was honorable and efficient. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church and endeavored in his everyday life to reflect the teachings of that institution. He was also a member of the local G. A. R.

Mr. Cooper, in spite of his advanced age, was able to look after his business affairs until the last few months of his life. He took delight in meeting every obligation when due, and was generous, straightforward and honest in all his dealings with his fellow men. His record as a soldier and a citizen was worthy of emulation. Thus, one by one the old soldiers pass away, and there is none more deserving of a realization of his hopes and beliefs in the world which is to come than William Henry Cooper.
