7 April 1870 ---- 18 October 1939

Bertha Christena Garnatz was born at Waterford, Wis., April 7, 1870, and passed away at her home October 18, 1939, at 8:30 in the evening, being at the time of her passing 69 years, 6 months and 11 days. She was married to Herman C. Willert at Waterford, Wis., Jan. 11, 1889, who preceded her in death Dec. 16, 1933. To this union five children were born, all surviving except one son who passed away in infancy. The surviving children are Anna V. and Emma at home, Mrs. C. McBride of Clarion, and Warren of this city. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Willert L. McBride of Long Beach, Calif., Chrissie Ione of Des Moines, and Iris Rogene at home; two younger sisters, Mrs. J. O. Dukleth and Mrs. Albert Hanson of Waterford, Wis.

She has lived a full and useful life, and has truly rounded out her years in service and self sacrifice to those who were near and dear to her. She was a quiet unassuming woman, her interests being centered in her home and family.

Death is a great revelator and in turning out some lights, turns on others. In our moments of silence and sorrow and tears, we can look through the mists of years and allow our imagination to call forth scenes that must have transpired, the battles which we know were fought, and the victories which, we know were won, until her life becomes fairly sublime. While she sensed deeply the disappointments and sorrows incident to this vale of tears, she bore her trials patiently and uncomplainingly.

Her illness and death can truly be likened to the fading of a beautiful flower. This grand silent life has passed out of mortal sight, and may we like this good mother so live that when we come to the river that marks the unknown shore, our hands may be filled with deeds of charity, the golden key that opens the palace of eternity, and that it can be truthfully said of us as it is said of her, she lived to serve those she loved.

Services were held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 21, at Wilson's chapel with Elder Norman Anderson of Des Moines in charge with Elder Guy Fowler of Webster City, assisting. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery. Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hanson of Waterford, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Garnatz, Robert and Ida Garnatz of Audubon; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Williamson of Yetter; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoadley of Kanawha; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Fowler, Mrs. Ernest Stillwell, Mrs. Daryl Trusty and Mrs. Marion Seamonds of Webster City; Elder Norman Anderson, Misses Clara Mayer and Hazel Pease of Des Moines.
