Marvel Arlene State the daughter of Archie and Verna (Winslow) State, on October 25, 1923. She spent her early childhood years in the Galt, IA, area where she attended country schools and graduated from Clarion High school. Marvel was united in marriage to Edwin Box on September 10, 1944, at the Rowan Congregation Church. Following their marriage the couple began a life long partnership that lasted for 52 years prior to Ed passing in 1996. The couple's union was blessed with three children including: a son Glenn and two daughters Kathy and Sheryl.
Marvel and Edwin were a team and in addition to raising their children had raised both dairy cattle and crops. Marvel was a loving wife and nurturing mother who truly relished the roles she fulfilled. She looked forward to supporting her children in all of their life endeavors no matter what they might involve. Marvel and Ed looked forward to outings to area dance venues and especially enjoyed travels for an evening of dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. She and Ed truly loved big band including Glenn Miller, Tom Dorsey and so many others, as well as classic country western artists such as George Strait, Alan Jackson Clint Black, Blake Shelton and others. Marvel was an avid car racing fan and had been to Knoxville Raceway for various events and always looked forward to attending races at the Webster City Speedway with her family where she ardently cheered on her regional favorites. Marvel's favorite Nascar driver was Kasey Kahne.
Marvel was the first librarian at the Rowan Library where she dedicated her time for many years. She loved large family gatherings and looked forward to celebrating the holidays with her loved ones. She was a member on the "Come Join Us Club", the United Church of Rowan, and had participated in the Quilting group at the church and doing puzzling. In earlier years she did wonderful crochet work. Marvel always kept a meticulous house and yard and could often be seen doing yard work well into her 90's. She was a lady somewhat reserved in nature who had a warm and welcoming presence. She was hardworking and fairly independent and fortunate enough to continue to drive up to her passing. She enjoyed the quiet and solitude of life on the farm and loved animals. A favorite past time was feeding the orioles, Gold Finches, Grosbeaks and a wide variety of other bird and watching the deer in her farm yard.
Marvel's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her daughter: Kathy Box, Des Moines, IA, son Glenn (Vicki) Box, Rowan, IA and their son Christopher and his companion Diane Bock, Mason City, IA; and a daughter Sheryl (Dave) Bokhoven, Pella, IA, and their son Tony Berkhoven, Pella, IA; a sister Berniece Andrews, Belmond, IA; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ed in October 1996, sister Marion Arends, brothers-in-law Ryle Andrews and Henry Arends, and nieces Lynne Aldrich, a nephew John Arends and niece Moonstone White.
