The death of N.A. Espeland occurred at his home in this city Friday, June 8, 1917, of cancer of the stomach. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and were largely attended.
Mr. Espeland had resided here 28 years and was one of the early settlers and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He was a painter and paper-hanger by trade and knew how to do his work well.
Nels Anders Espeland was born April 3, 1842 in Sovde, Norway. He studied artistic painting in Soness, Norway.
He was married to Martha Brekke of Sovde, Norway and to this union five children were born, three of whom are living: Mrs. Mars Larsen of Northwood, Iowa; Alfred of Jackson, MN and Martin of Manson, Iowa. Dora and Jacob are deceased.
The family moved to Roland, Iowa in 1880 in which place his wife died in 1888. He came to Eagle Grove in 1889 and in 1893 he was married to Cecelia Udager of Eagle Grove. Three children were born to this union: Nellie, Martha and Kathryn.
Mr. Espeland was quite well all winter, but began to fail about Easter.
