Max A. Mechem, 79, of Yucca Valley, Ca., died Friday, Jan. 8, at a hospital in Palm Springs, Ca., after suffering a stroke on Dec. 24. He had been in failing health for several years. Memorial services will be held Jan. 14 at the Baptist Church in Yucca Valley, Ca.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, sons, Roger of Upland, Ca.; Larry of Longmont, Colo.; Dick of Huntsville, Ut.; daughter, Mrs. Paul (Dee Ann) Kerns of Yucca Valley, Ca.; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Orel Caster; one brother, Lynn Mechem, both of Clarion.

Max was born June 26, 1908 on a farm south of Clarion in Lincoln Township to Arthur and Grace Yocum Mechem. He received his early education at Lincoln Township #4 school, graduating from Clarion High School in 1927, attending Iowa State University. On April 14, 1934, he married Ethel Nelson at Kanawha. They resided in Fort Dodge, where he was a salesman for The Fort Dodge Fruit and Grocery. Later living in Estherville, Brainard, Mn., Aberdeen, S.D. Jan. 1944-1946, he served in World War II, as an Instructor at Fort Sill, Okla.; returning to Rapid City, S.D., after his Honorable Discharge. In 1950, the family moved to the Clarion and Eagle Grove area and farmed. In 1958, they moved to Cotton, Ca. He was an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance Group. He retired in 1980 and moved to Yucca Valley, Ca. He was a member of the Clarion Church of Christ. While living in the Clarion area, he served on the Wright County Extension Council.
