Winnifred (Winnie) Erts, 86, of Popejoy, formerly of Dows, died Wednesday, January 6 at the Loma Linda Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 1988 at Popejoy United Methodist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Dows. The Rev. Fitzh presided.
Winnie was born December 18, 1901 near Rowan, Iowa, the daughter of William and Catherine Newcomer Osborne. She was united in marriage to Frank Erts September 23, 1939 at Faribault, Minnesota. She lived in Dows until her marriage, moving to Popeioy in October of 1940. She graduated from Dows High School in 1920. She taught school in the Dows area in 1918 and later was a substitute teacher for the Popejoy schools. She and her husband owned and operated the Popejoy Creamery & Locker and later the Popejoy Grocery until their retirement. She was a member of the Popejoy Methodist Church, the Dows American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, and a charter
member of the Popejoy Improvement Club.Survivors include two brothers, Elmer Osborne of Dows and Wayne Osborne of South Sioux City, NE; one sister, June Bates of Geneseo, IL; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank on February 3, 1979, one sister, and two brothers. Surls Funeral Home of Alden was in charge of arrangements.
