Cedar Rapids, Iowa ---- Doris Allred Bareis, 95, passed away peacefully at the home of her son in Cedar Rapids on July 10, 2018. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 20, at First Lutheran Church, 100 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, with a lunch to follow.

She was born July 29, 1922, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Melvina (nee Smith) Allred and Charles Allred. Her parents were of English, Irish and Scottish descent. Doris was proud of her heritage and eventually visited those countries with her son and daughter. She attended Ottumwa High School and earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. Ambrose College. She taught English and language arts in Clarion and Postville, Iowa, where she also directed plays. In 1952, she married Arbe F. Bareis and resided rurally around Ottumwa. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1965, where Doris taught English at Wilson Junior High and Washington High School, until retiring at age 68. She spent her last 10 years at Washington teaching English language learners, which she found very rewarding. After retirement, Doris continued to socialize with her many friends. She learned to swim in her 70s and taught water aerobics at the YMCA until age 94.

Doris enjoyed reading, creating beautiful flower beds of roses and moss roses and was an inspired baker and knitter of intricate sweaters. She taught her daughter, Mary, to sew and bake and encouraged her son Arbe's musical and painting gifts. Doris loved to shop and was always beautifully dressed; she never left the house without lipstick. She owned numerous dogs and cats over her lifetime and liked to drive red cars. She was a member of First Lutheran Church since 1964 and sang in the choir, which provided her the opportunity for international travel. Doris participated in numerous social justice outreach programs and was a deacon, visiting those who were home-bound or in the hospital. She spent several weeks each year in Minnesota visiting her grandchildren.

Her children include Mary Bareis (Pong Khow) of New Hope, Minn., and Arbe Bareis (Arno Moyyad), with whom she resided with in Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by grandsons, Andrew Khow (Kelsey) and Nicholas Khow (Aly Rhodes), and would have been a great-grandmother this coming August. Doris attended both grandsons' weddings in 2017 in the Twin Cities. She is also survived by nieces, Jean (Ron) Mathis, Pat Hilton and Judi Kupsis (John); nephew, Jim (Sue) Allred; and cousins, Roger (Betty) Smith and Bill Smith; plus many friends, several of whom considered her to be a second mother or sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arbe F.; and brother, Jesse.
