Jean received a 2-year teaching degree from Iowa State Teacher's College and taught elementary school in several Iowa schools before returning to college at Iowa State University where she received her degree in home economics education. She was employed as a home economics teacher in Parkersburg, Iowa when she met her husband Paul Trey. The couple married on July 24, 1955. They had 3 children.

A lover of nature, Jean enjoyed gardening and preserving food and passed on her cooking and sewing skills to many, including her children. She enjoyed many trips to see other parts for the country and the world but especially to visit her children and grandchildren.

Her faith was central to her life. Jean was a member of the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church for over 60 years. She served in the church by teaching Bible School and Catechism, leading Bible studies and serving as president of Ladies Aid and the Women's League.
