Kay LaVon Gray, the daughter of Conrad and Helen (Malen) Glantz, was born on November 12, 1935, in Norman, Minnesota. Kay graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1953 and then attended Iowa School Of Beauty Culture in Des Moines. On October 22, 1955, Kay was united in marriage with Robert C. Gray in Boone and to this union six children were born. The family made their home in various cities, including Blairsburg, New London, Plover, Pocahontas and in 1966 they made Eagle Grove their home. Kay operated "Kay's Salon" in her home – cutting, perming and coloring people's hair for 35 years. Kay was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove and former member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas.

During the 1990's, Kay moved to Phoenix, Arizona to be near family. She worked at J.C. Penney outlet warehouse for 10 years, where she became fast friends with several of her co-workers. She remained in contact with them throughout the years, and loved to tell stories of her adventures with them.

After a brain tumor removal in Phoenix, she moved back to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to be with family and to be closer to home. Soon after, Kay became a resident at Rotary Senior Living, where she stayed until her passing. Kay enjoyed reading, cross words, playing 500 and traveling.

Kay passed away on the morning of Monday, April 30, 2018, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 82 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on September 2, 1981; sister, Pat Duley; son-in-law, Ernie Shaw and sister-in-law, Elaine Glantz. Kay is survived by her children: Mike Gray (Caryn) of Melborne Beach, FL, Dana Gray (Debbie) of Bountiful, UT, Katherine Shaw of Centre, AL, Susan Mersch of Des Moines, Deb Schlindwein (Scott) of Clearwater, FL and Elwood Gray (Nadine) of Boise, ID; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and brother, Conley Glantz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father Jerry Blake celebrating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Lunch will be served at Sacred Heart Parish Hall after the burial service. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
