Tom Grover Downs, age 72 of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away Dec. 23, 2017. He was born on May 20, 1945 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to the late Grover and Naomi Vye Downs.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rodgers Downs of Franklin, Tennessee; sons, Todd (Stacey) Downs of Franklin, Tennessee, Jay Downs of Franklin, Tennessee, and Michael (Meghan) Downs of Nashville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Caden, Emmaline, Thomas and Elle Downs; sisters, Anita Trostem of Owatonna, Minnesota and Margaret Steenblock of Kelmme, Iowa; step-sister, Kathy Gabrielson of Britt, Iowa; and half-brother, Chuck Downs of St. Paul, Minnesota. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Tim Downs.

Tom grew up in Belmond, Iowa, and graduated from University of Northern Iowa in 1968. He met his wife while in college, and they were married for 48 years. A resident of Franklin for 36 years, Tom coached youth basketball and soccer, teaching sportsmanship to his sons and others. He brought joy to every occasion, typically being the first one on the dance floor and the last one to leave. He lived what he taught, living by the Golden Rule and always "doing the right thing". He was a loving husband, father, and friend and will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, with visitation 11 a.m.-2 p.m. prior to the service at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Jim Taylor officiating. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation;
