Former Boone assistant principal, Harold M. Smith Jr., dies

Harold M. Smith, Jr., 66, of 1523 Prairie Avenue, Boone [Iowa], died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., Monday afternoon due to complications from cancer. He was born April 5, 1936, in Valentine, Neb., the son of Harold and Mildred (Stewart) Smith, Sr. On Dec. 23, 1961, he married Joan Anderson at Irwin, Iowa.

His early years were in Valentine, Neb., and Niobrara, Neb. As a child, he rode his bicycle 5 miles to play baseball. He later developed the same love for the game of golf. His family moved to the Cherokee and Grand Meadow area where he attended school. He was a graduate of Grand Meadow High School and he served in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves.

He graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in Nebraska where he played varsity basketball and went on to teach and coach at Wales-Lincoln High School at Emerson, Iowa. He worked a short time in Omaha, Neb., and then coached and taught social studies in Irwin. He received his masters in education administration degree from Drake University in 1967 and was the principal at Goldfield for two years before coming to Boone in 1969 to serve as the assistant principal at Boone Junior-Senior High School. He retired from secondary education in 1995, working briefly for Metropolitan Supply Company and was currently the Prelead Internship Coordinator for the Education Department at Iowa State University since 1996.

He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, former Boone Lions Club member, member of School Administrators of Iowa and he served on numerous professional, educational, community and civic organizations. He had good rapport with people and was able to identify and communicate with students, faculty and the administration.

His mother preceded him in death in 1999. Survivors include his wife, Joan, of Boone; two sons, Steven Smith and his wife, Ronda, of Johnston, and Dan Smith and his wife, Cheryl, of St. Charles, Mo.; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Grant Smith, both of Johnston, and Andrew and Megan Smith, both of St. Charles, Mo.; his father of Mesa, Az.; one sister, Mary Hartliep and her husband, Ron, of Tucson, AZ; two nieces, Rhonda Hartliep of Denver, Colo. and Kerry Dorsey and her husband, Kent and daughters of Tucson, Az.; two nephews, Brian Hartliep and his wife, Renee and daughters of Tucson, Az., and Bradley Hartliep of Fort Worth, Texas; and special aunts, uncles, and cousins in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and California.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, March 14, at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone, with the Rev. Daniel W. Solomon officiating. Interment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to greet friends, and at Augustana Lutheran Church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service on Friday, March 14. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, or BEEF (Boone Education Endowment Fund). Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
