Merton A. McKean, 85, of Goldfield. Iowa died Sunday, May 22, 2005 at his home after his battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Merton Arthur McKean was born January 11, 1920 to Charles and Emma (Steele) McKean in Welcome, Minnesota. He married Elizabeth Burt on February 26, 1946 in Estherville, Iowa at the Presbyterian Church. Merton served in the United States Army from October 3, 1941 till his honorable discharge on November 19, 1945. Merton graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and from Drake University with a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education. Merton was employed with Goldfield High School as a math teacher for 42 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Goldfield Presbyterian Church, Goldfield Lions Club, and the Goldfield American Legion. Merton's joys were family, friends, teaching and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth McKean of Goldfield; son Charles (Patricia) McKean of Estherville, IA, three daughters Helen (Richard) Goater of Goldfield, Eilleen Freeman of San Diego, CA, and Margaret (Leo) Johnson of Eagle Grove, IA; one brother Russell McKean of Fairmont, MN, five sisters Joyce Peton of Estherville, IA, Dorothy Helgason of Armstrong, IA, Gertrude Jensen of Armstrong, IA, Mary Jean Helgason of Independence, MO, and Margola McKean of Kent, WA. Also surviving are ten grandchildren Rhonda Freeman, Chris Freeman, Lance Johnson, Jason Johnson, Jesse Johnson, Jarib McKean, Jamin McKean, Josiah Riparetti, Cole Goater, and Clae Goater; plus eight great grandchildren. His parents and one brother Keith McKean preceded him in death. The Cremation Society of Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
