Genevieve Doherty was born July 30, 1902 at Rock Valley. She was the daughter of Bernard and Sarah Linnan Doherty. In 1919, she graduated from St. Mary's High School at Rock Valley and attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She taught at Laurens, Eagle Grove and Emmetsburg. October 4, 1927, she was married to F. Leo (Shorty) Porter at Rock Valley and they made their home in Clarion. Later Mrs. Porter returned to teaching and taught at Goldfield and Eagle Grove before retiring in 1966. Mr. Porter died in 1983.

Genevieve Porter, 85, Clarion, died early Monday morning, June 6, 1988 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion where she had been a patient for the past four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a son, Pat of Fort Dodge, and a daughter, Sara, of Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Porter was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Clarion, St. Mary's Circle, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, National Retired Teachers Association, and the Clarion Senior Citizens.

Services were held from St. John's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 8, with the Rev. John Brickley officiating. Burial was in St. John's cemetery. The Eyler-Willim Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
