Daniel G. Filkins, 80, died Monday, Aug. 8, 1994, at his home after a lengthy illness. A funeral service celebrating Mr. Filkins' life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Charles Patchen will officiate and the Rev. Dan Nygaard will assist. Interment will take place at Grandview Cemetery [Fort Collins, Colorado].

Mr. Filkins was born March 10, 1914, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Following graduation from high school in Morrison, Ill., he attended Iowa State University and the University of New Mexico, where he graduated in 1939 with a degree in engineering and economics.

On Sept. 23, 1940, he married Jean Elizabeth Pendleton in Las Vegas, N.M. After briefly working in Houston and Chicago, he and his wife moved to Roy, N. M., where he was employed as a Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealer for 23 years. In 1969, he and his wife moved to Fort Collins to retire.

Mr. Filkins was actively involved in church and community activities throughout his life. While in New Mexico he served as lay minister, elder and teacher of the local Christian Church. After moving to Fort Collins, he became a member and served as elder, teacher and business administrator of the First Christian Church of Fort Collins. Mr. Filkins and his wife were instrumental in founding the First Christian Church Outreach Center in the early 1980's.

Mr. Filkins was also active with Gideons International, locally and internationally. While serving with the Gideons, he was one of the original representatives to Mexico City and surrounding areas as part of the group's initial international expansion. He was founder and fund raiser for the First Christian Foundation, an endowment organization dedicated to providing financial support for outreach and other ministries of the First Christian Church. In 1989, Mr. Filkins founded the Central Rocky Mountain Region Foundation, Disciples of Christ, in Denver for the administration of gifts and bequests given to CRMR.

Mr. Filkins served as chairman of the board of the Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kan., and as a board member of the Colorado Christian Home in Denver for more than 10 years.

In 1992, Mr. Filkins and his wife were honored as Citizens of the Year by the Fort Collins Board of Realtors for their service at the Outreach Center. Mr. Filkins was also named Colorado Senior Citizen of the Year by the state and also received recognition by the State of Colorado Volunteer Services.

He is survived by his wife; three sons; a brother; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Foundation and designated to the Outreach Center, or to Gideons International, in care of the Goodrich Chapel.
