Marvin James Spangler, the son of Elias and Martha Larson Spangler, was born on May 1, 1907, on a farm in Troy Township, south of Eagle Grove, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in the rural schools. On October 10, 1925, he was united in marriage with Emma Victoria Sanders at Boone, Iowa. To this union were born seven children. The family lived and farmed in the Eagle Grove-Woolstock and Goldfield areas until 1969, when Marvin and Emma retired and moved to Eagle Grove and lived on West Broadway. Mrs. Spangler died on March 27, 1976. Marvin was a member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. He has been a resident of the Rotary Ann Home in Eagle Grove since January of 1981.

He died at the Rotary Ann Home on Tuesday evening, July 23, 1985, at the age of 78 years, two months and 22 days. He is survived by two daughters, Shirley, Mrs. Loren Krieger of Woolstock; Mary Spangler of Belmond; four sons, Edward of Eagle Grove; Richard of Pleasantville; Ronald of Sonoma, Calif.; Dale of Webster City; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn, Mrs. Orville Gearhart of Whittier, Calif.; a brother, Donald Spangler of Chandler, Ariz., and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Bruce Spangler, and a brother, Bernard Spangler, and an infant son, Clarence.

Funeral services for Marvin J. Spangler, 78, of Eagle Grove were held Friday, July 26,1985 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. John Hembry, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Woolstock, officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Thursday.
