October 6, 1899 ---- December 27, 1987

Fern Victoria Nelson was born October 6, 1899, at Conrad, the daughter of Frank and Mary Ann Baker Bowers. She received her education in the Conrad Public School. Fern was working in Marshalltown as a telephone operator when she met Harry Nelson of Eagle Grove. They were united in marriage May 3, 1918, at Leavenworth, Kan. The young couple moved to Eagle Grove at this time and lived the rest of their married lives in Eagle Grove. Mr. Nelson died in 1954.

Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove, the White Shrine, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Fern suffered a stroke on December 9, 1987 and after hospitalization moved to the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, where she died December 27, 1987 at the age of 88 years, two months, and 21 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, Louis Howard, and another son, Dale, and a brother, Floyd Bowers. She is survived by three sons, Harry Jr., and wife, Rita, Cleveland, Ohio; William and wife, Violet, Tuscon, Ariz; Donald and wife, Phyllis, Mason City; three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Phyllis) Wobbeking, Dows; Mrs. Sam (Nada) Mattie, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Philip (Mary Ann) Elrod, Ames; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held December 31, 1987 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove.
