Margerite McGuliley Donovan

December 16, 1840 --- June 3, 1914

Mrs. Margaret Donovan widow of M. K. Donovan dies at the Eastern Ave. home June 3rd aged 74 years.

Margret McGinley was born in Canada Dec. 16, 1840. Her mother died when she was in infancy. At 7 years of age she went to Repon, Wisconsin with her brother and in 1864 was united in marriage to M. K. Donovan and in 1868 came to Ackley, Franklin Co., Ia. Two children were born in Wisconsin, Mary and Don, now living. Ten children were born to this union three of whom died in infancy. In 1904 Joseph, a son was drowned in the Mississippi near St. Louis. Three sons M. D. of Eagle Grove, B. S. and L. P. of Butte, Montana, and three daughters Mary Donovan of Eagle Grove, Nellie Donovan and Mrs. Robt. Miles of Mason City are living, and were here to attend the funeral. The funeral was held in Sacred Heart church with Rev. Father Nolan conducting the services Saturday June 6th at 9 o'clock A. M. The interment followed in the Catholic cemetery on Rose Hill.

The pallbearers were the three sons M. D., B. S., and L. P. Donovan and Robt. Miles, son-in-law, Jas. Donovan, brother of M. K. Donovan, and Jas. McGrath, a cousin.

Among those here to attend the funeral besides the six children were Jas. Donovan, brother of M. K. Donovan of Minneapolis, Mrs. Ellen Hardy, a niece, Dante, So. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kenefick, and Jas. Kenefick cousin of Belmond, Dr. M. J. Kenefick, cousins, of Algona, Jas. McGrath and daughter Julia, Mrs. McGee cousins of Mason City, Jne McGrath, cousin of Hampton, Mrs. Kate Rooney and daughter Anna, cousin, of Adrian Minn., Wm. Donovan a nephew, and family, of Webster City, Mrs. Wm. Hayes and Jos. Lynch of Ackley, Miss Margaret McMahon of Waterloo, Mrs. Jas. Laughlin, Chicago and Jne Kaufman niece of Mrs. Donovan of Dodge Center Minn.

The deceased was a woman of vigorous health all her long life. On March 2nd 1907 she had a fall in the yard at her home which resulted in a broken hip which left her a permanent cripple. In 1908 another fall broke an arm. Despite these misfortunes she remained in good health and vigor until about 18 months ago when she was taken with a sinking spell which has been of more or less frequent recurrence since. In these she would remain unconscious sometimes for many hours. It was in one of these she passed away at 3 o'clock A.M. June 3rd. She attended mass the Sunday morning before and a few hours after was stricken and never regained consciousness.

Mrs. Donovan was an amiable, motherly-hearted woman, and, was revered and loved by all who knew her. She was born in the Catholic faith and was a faithful communicant all her life. Her husband Hon. M. K. Donovan died here about 7 years ago. He was twice Mayor of Eagle Grove and was a man of unusual ability and strong individuality. The children are all person's of exceptionally good characters, intelligent making a friend of every acquaintance. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Donovan lived in the city home with her daughter, Mary, and the son, M. D., has conducted the half section farm which lays about three miles south of the city. Mrs. Donovan had a rich heritage in the affection of her children who gave her every possible attention and service in her last days that love could suggest.
