Roy Benjamin Chelesvig was born July 27, 1901, the son of Ole and Margaret (Tesdahl) Chelesvig at Kelly. He married Martha Berhow at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on March 11, 1927.

Roy and Martha moved to the Ole Nervig farm near Eagle Grove in 1930 where they lived for a short time before moving to the Henry Derscheid farm in 1933. They lived on the Derscheid farm for 35 years, raising eight children, before they moved into Eagle Grove in 1968. Roy continued to be involved in the farming operation for many years after he moved to town. He was a longtime member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a trustee for many years. He was also a member of the NFO, the Sons of Norway, Senior Citizens, and the "Over the Hill Gang."

Roy Chelesvig died at his home on Monday evening, May 21, 1990 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Maurice; one daughter-in-law, Nadine Chelesvig; two grandchildren; one brother, Porter; and one sister, Beatrice Dobbe. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by four sons, Thomas, Webster City and Patti Hunter; Charles and Evelyn of Eagle Grove; Joseph and Ellen of Boulder, Colo.; and James and Caye of Belmond; three daughters, Mrs. Kenny (Norma) Gangestad, Villisca; Mrs. Jerry (Ruth) Helmick, Kansas City, Mo.; Julie of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cliff (Joyce) Olson, Kanawha; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 24 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with the Rev. Lyle E. Peters officiating.
