Martha Jeanette Chelesvig, the daughter of Thomas and Ella Birkestrand Berhow, was born on November 3, 1906 on a farm near Cambridge, Iowa. She attended school at Huxley, Iowa and was confirmed in the Norwegian language at the Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. For several years, Martha was employed at Iowa State College and worked for the Munn family in Ames, Iowa. On March 11, 1927 she was united in marriage with Roy B Chelesvig of Huxley at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. To this union were born eight children. The family farmed near Huxley until 1930, when they moved to a farm southwest of Eagle Grove. In 1968, they moved to Eagle Grove. She died at the Chelesvig home in Eagle Grove, early Thursday morning, November 19, 1981 at the age of 75 years and 16 days.

Martha was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a very active member in the ALCAV and church circle and she enjoyed her neighborhood Troy Culture Club. Her family and friends have always been a very important part of her life. She was also active in the Sons of Norway.

Martha is survived by her husband, Roy B. Chelesvig of Eagle Grove; her sons and daughters, Norma, Mrs. Kenneth Gangestad of Atlantic, Iowa, Ruth, Mrs. Jerry Helmick of Grundy Center, Iowa; Julie Chelesvig of West Des Moines, Thomas of Webster City, Charles of Eagle Grove; Joseph of Boulder, Colo.; James of Anita, Iowa, her twin sister, Mabel (Mrs. Laird) Harris of Ames, Iowa; 22 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers; a son, Maurice who died in 1975 and was living at Belmond at the time of his death, and two grandchildren.
