Homer Dewey Hawthorne was born August 26, 1898, near Goldfield, Iowa, the son of James R. Hawthorne and Sarilda Smith Hawthorne. He was educated in the Wright County School No. 2, near Goldfield. He farmed until entering the Army during World War II, where he served six months, and was discharged because of over age. He returned to the farm, and has lived there since that time. He retired from farming in 1968. Mr. Hawthorne died at his home on November 28 at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 2 days.
He is survived by four sisters: Ethel Grove, Maysville, W. Va.; Stella Crump, Goldfield; Hazel Herbster, Tulsa, Okla.; Ada Hawthorne, Goldfield. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, his parents, and two brothers: Elzie J. Hawthorne and Everett R. Hawthorne; and two sisters: Mrs. Delia Baer and Mrs. Daisey Hazelwood. Mr. Hawthorne was a member of the American Legion. Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Renwick Baptist Church. Rev. Ralph Benson and Rev. Doug Hanson officiating, with the burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Renwick.
