Elsie A. Saathoff, age 81, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died March 28, 2012 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 2, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Visitation with the family present will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be at a later date in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie Alice Davis, the daughter of Gilbert L. and Regina M (Hoyer) Davis, was born in Manson, Iowa on April 8, 1930. She lived her youth in Manson and was a 1948 graduate of the Manson High School. Elsie was baptized in 1930 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dayton, Iowa and was later confirmed at St. Paul’s American Lutheran Church in Manson in 1945.

On November 5, 1948, Elsie was united in marriage to Donald G. Saathoff at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Manson. Together, they were blessed with eight children: Larry, Linda, Julie, Janet, Susan, Dale, Nancy, and Rodney. Throughout their married lifetime, Elsie and Don have resided in the communities of Fort Dodge, Manson, Clarion, Woolstock, Rockwell City, Plover and then came to make their home in Sioux Rapids in 1974. Elsie had been employed as a factory work, a nurse’s aide, a home health care aide, and a custodian.

Elsie was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Rapids where she had served on the Church Council, Altar Guild, and was a member of the WELCA. Gardening was a special passion of Elsie’s along with baking. Her family was the loving focus of her life and she cherished the times she could spend with all of them, especially playing with and reading to her grandchildren. Elsie will also be remembered by her family and friends as the best letter writer ever.

Elsie’s life will always be honored and cherished by her family which include her husband of 63 years, Don Saathoff of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; children: Linda Saathoff of Pocahontas, Iowa; Julie (David) Waterman of Alta, Iowa; Janet (Carlos) Ledezma of Storm Lake, Iowa; Susan (Don) Krueger of Aurelia, Iowa; Dale (Debra) Saathoff of Peterson, Iowa; Nancy (Glenn) Wynia of Sioux Center, Iowa; Rodney Saathoff of Linn Grove, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; three sisters: Lois Porth of Ankeny, Iowa; Norma (John) Jacobs of Manson, Iowa; Anna (Harry) Kraft of New York Mills, Minnesota; other extended family and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Larry; granddaughter, Stacy; and a sister, Ruby Brown.
