Donald Saathoff, 89, of Sioux Rapids, died June 12, 2017 in Sioux Rapids. Funeral services were held Monday, June 19, at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald George Saathoff was born Feb. 17, 1928 in Pomeroy, the son of Ekke Saathoff and Margaret (Nomann) Saathoff. On March 25, 1928 Don was baptized at St. John American Lutheran Church in Pomeroy where he was also later confirmed. Don attended country school in rural Pomeroy through the eighth grade.

On Nov. 5, 1948 Don was united in marriage to Elsie Davis at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Manson. Together they were blessed with eight children: Larry, Linda, Julie, Janet, Susan, Dale, Nancy and Rodney. Throughout their married lifetime, Elsie and Don have resided in the communities of Fort Dodge, Manson, Clarion, Woolstock, Rockwell City, Plover and then they made their home in Sioux Rapids in 1974. Don was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids where he had served as head usher.

Throughout his life, Don worked as a truck driver, a factory worker and also enjoyed helping area farmers to stay busy. Pastimes enjoyed by Don included helping with Bingo at the nursing home, attending Dinner Date and playing cards. Don also enjoyed traveling with Elsie, going for drives and doing jigsaw puzzles. He especially liked the annual trips to the Dayton Rodeo.

Don’s life will always be honored and cherished by his family which include his children: Linda Saathoff of Pocahontas; Julie (David) Waterman of Alta; Janet Halder of Storm Lake; Susan (Don) Krueger of Aurelia; Dale (Debra) Saathoff of Peterson; Nancy (Glenn) Wynia of Sioux Center; Rodney Saathoff of Linn Grove; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie; son, Larry; granddaughter, Stacy; and siblings: Hannah (Hank) Panbecker, John (Betty) Saathoff and Ann (Dave) Waite.
