Edna Lillian Tavener was born in Decorah, Iowa on October 19,1887. She was the youngest of seven children. Her father was John Isaac Tavener II who operated a farm, a flour mill and the ice delivery business in Decorah. Her mother was Caroline W. Fawcett. They were Quakers and descendants of the earliest English settlers in the Decorah area.
Edna enjoyed sports and music in her youth. She played the piano and the organ for the Congregational Church in Decorah. She was on the first girls' basketball team in Decorah in 1906. She graduated from Decorah High School. She worked as a dental assistant prior to her marriage to Bernhard Waldemar Olson on January 31, 1917. They had one child, Lois Margaret. The couple first lived in Decorah, then Forest City, Ossian, Jewell, Stratford, and Eagle Grove. They moved to Eagle Grove in 1935, living there for 25 years. Mr. Olson was a banker. He died in 1960. Mrs. Olson then made her home with her daughter and family in Owatonna, Minn. She moved to Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna in 1984 after an illness which kept her in a wheelchair.
Edna Lillian Olson died Sunday, Feb. 26, 1989, at the age of 101 at the Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; three sisters; and her husband. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Odell and Lois Knutson of Owatonna, Minn.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Raymond Haugland officiated and interment was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
