Melvin Ervin Lehman, the son of Ervin H. and Frieda (Licht) Lehman, was born on August 30, 1934, on the family farm in Humboldt County, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the Thor area, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1953. On November 28, 1954, Mel was united in marriage with Jean Torkelson, at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor. The couple made their home and raised nine children in Thor and Eagle Grove. Mel worked for Farmland Industries (Boone Valley Co-Op) for 43 years. For many years, he also farmed "for his enjoyment" in the southeast part of Eagle Grove.
Mel was a very active and faithful member of Samuel Lutheran Church and a former member of Evangelical Lutheran. He served as a trustee, on the church council, funeral usher, and supporting Samuel's Little Disciples. He could be seen in the community driving his horse team and wagon representing Samuel Lutheran in the Wright County Fair parades and giving rides to those at Rotary Ann Home.
Mel was a very vocal supporter of his children's and grandchildren's sporting and musical events. He loved his horses as he was an active member of both the Hitch-N-Go Club and the Saddle Club. He could also be found in the kitchen thoroughly enjoying cooking turkeys for the annual community Thanksgiving dinner
Mel was very thankful for the wonderful family the Lord had blessed him with and extremely proud of each and everyone one of them. Mel passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, at the age of 82 years.
