November 27, 1948 ---- May 20, 2017

Paul Curtis Hillestad (68), aka: "Pauly" or "Paul the Barber", died on approximately May 20, 2017 at his home in Mason City, Iowa. Paul was born to John and Mary "Marguerite" (nee Cottrell) Hillestad on Nov. 27, 1948 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, IA. Paul graduated from Vinton High School, attended Barber College and was soon drafted into the U.S Army, where he served in Vietnam. After his service, he started a family and worked at John Deere until they relocated to Clarion, IA, where he began his barbering career in earnest.

Known to many simply as "Paul The Barber", he was one of the last remaining barbers in Mason City and will be sorely missed by his dedicated clientele. They are not only saddened by the fact they need to find a new barber, but don't know who will take their old junk now that Paul is gone.

He enjoyed wood working, fishing, golfing, attending concerts, hanging out with friends, drinking Black Velvet, manufacturing his own cigarettes, collecting junk, and generally giving people a hard time. His friends will miss his bad jokes, "secret" recipe treats he always brought to share, his musical talent (guitar and singing), his @#$*-eating grin/smirk, getting the bird whenever he walked through the door, and his Pauly-isms. He was an active member of the Mason City Moose Lodge #1328 and VFW Post 733, where he will be sorely missed.

Paul is survived by his daughter, Shawn (husband Stephen) Devoid of Tucson, AZ who inherited Paul's entrepreneurial dreamer spirit and his son, Ross Hillestad (Stuart, FL) who inherited his father's good looks and musical talent. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Marguerite, and his brother, John "Craig" Hillestad.

An informal celebration of life / reception will be held at the Mason City Moose Lodge, 22 4th NW beginning at 2:00 pm, Sunday June 4th. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Pauly's life; we look forward to seeing you! Condolences, memorials, and questions may be directed to: Shawn Devoid, in care of Mason City Moose Lodge, 22 4th NW Mason City, IA; Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, IA
