Mrs. H. B. Dorenkamp, nee Annette Stahl was born on December 24, 1854 at Bunde, Eastfreisland, Germany. At about the age of five she became an orphan as both her father and mother died within a very short time but a home was given to her by her elder sister. On the 3rd of April, 1879 she was united in marriage to Hemme B. Dorenkamp. This union was blessed with 9 children of which five preceded the mother into eternity. In the spring of the year 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Dorenkamp and two of their children left their native country and sailed for America. They made their home in this community without interval. Mrs. Dorenkamp became one of the charter members of the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond. On April 3, 1929, Mr. and Mrs. Dorenkamp celebrated their golden anniversary in the circle of their relatives and friends.
After the departure of her husband in 1935, Mrs. Dorenkamp made her home with her children, Jim, John and Jacob. She died on Wednesday evening the results of injuries received in an automobile accident. She had reached the age of 84 years, seven months and eight days.
She leaves to mourn her departure her three sons and one daughter who are Jacob of Meservey, John of Belmond and Jim of Grand Island, Nebr., and Mrs. Sophia Gruis of LaGrande, Ore., 35 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 6, 1939, at the Immanuel Reformed Church conducted by the Rev. E. Kampmann and Rev. O. G. Poppen. Interment was made in the family lot adjoining the church. Tobias Goeman, Jake Schmidt, John Smit, Harm Greenlander, H. H. Mennenga and George Bohning were the pallbearers.
