March 31, 1885 ---- April 9, 1956

Mr. Paul Flower, Sr., son of William and Mary Flower was born March 31, 1885 in Story City and passed away Monday, April 9, 1956 in the church of the Open Bible of Eagle Grove. He was 71 years and 9 days old at the time of his passing. When he was three years old, the family moved to Eagle Grove where he attended school. Later he worked on farms in this community. He was converted at the early age of 12 years in the Baptist Church and was baptized shortly thereafter. As a young man, he was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern railroad and then was employed by his brother in law, Thomas Wadell doing carpenter work.

He was united in marriage on October 15, 1913 to Nellie Lavina Summers. To this union was born four children: William Paul, Marlen Lee, Evilo Mary Belle and Pearl Avanell.

He started his own contracting and building business in Eagle Grove and last November completed 49 years of active work in this line, having built many of the Eagle Grove residences and business places. He was a charter member of the Church of the Open Bible of Eagle Grove, having had a great part of the contracting and building of the church originally. One of the last labors of love he accomplished along this line of the building was the completion of the church nursery so that the children might have a place of comfort. He was a faithful and staunch worker and supporter of his church. He had expressed many times recently his great joy over the recent completion of the new Church educational addition. He especially enjoyed the young people in the church and encouraged them to carry on the church in the future.

Brother Flower was a very devoted father and husband and spent a large part of his time doing things for them. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and spent much time with them. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. of Eagle Grove and was a member of the Masonic lodge.

His death Monday night was a great shock in as much as he had recovered very well from a heart attack last November and had seemed to be in fairly good health the past few weeks.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie and four children: Paul Flower of Eagle Grove, Marlen Flower of Seymour, Iowa, Miss. Evilo Flower, of Eagle Grove and Mrs. Avanell DeCamp of Natick, Mass. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Julia Meade of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Myrtle Opheim of Thor, Iowa and one brother, Walter Flower of Eagle Grove. Brother Flower also leaves a host of relatives and friends in the community who will miss him greatly.
