May 21, 1903 --- February 15, 1978

Rutherford Roosevelt Conaway, the son of John and Jenny Conaway, was born May 21, 1903 at New Virginia, Iowa. He attended school at New Virginia. On June 6, 1923 he was married to Marie Hovland of Kanawha at Kanawha. Following their marriage they made their home in Eagle Grove, later moving to Des Moines where he worked as a caterer for the Fort Des Moines Hotel, and then moving back to Eagle Grove after retirement. Rutherford died Wednesday, February 14, at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge at the age of 74 years, eight months, and 24 days.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; a son, Donald Conaway, Eagle Grove; three daughters: Ruth (Mrs. Tim) Thomas, Eagle Grove; Lenore Oldson, Conrad,Iowa; Phyllis (Mrs. Delmar) Rengstorf, Porterville, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Brock, Des Moines; fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Orlan and Odin, a sister, Irene, and a son-in-law, Albert Oldson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 18, at 2 p.m. at Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home, Eagle Grove; Rev. Marvin Berkeland of the Evangelical Lutheran Church officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
