Betty Jean “Slats” Andersen, age 83, of Carroll [Iowa] passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Casket bearers will be Betty’s grandsons: Christian Hovey, Matt Christian, Kory Holm, Luke Lockhart, Kevin Christian, Sam Van Sumple, Eric Van Sumple, Dutch Van Sumple and Justin Andersen. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday. The casket will be moved to First United Methodist Church at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.

Born on July 23, 1933 on her family’s farm near Guthrie Center IA, she was the daughter of George and Ruthie (Godwin) Boone. She grew up in Guthrie Center and attended School there. Following her schooling, Betty eventually moved on to Eagle Grove, Ia. She worked on a friend’s farm as well as working for Pioneer for many years as a Crew Lead. She was married to Duane Christian in 1951 and to this union were born three children: Denny, Deb and Diann. Betty was later married to Dale Andersen on May 24, 1980 in Las Vegas. She owned and operated Betty’s Café in Bayard, Ia. In the early 70’s then Betty purchased the Top Hat Lounge in Carroll in the late 1970’s and operated it until its closing. She then owned and operated the Top Hat Lounge in Glidden until she finally retired. Betty enjoyed flowers, gardening, playing cards, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Mema”.

Betty is survived by her husband Dale Andersen of Carroll; three children: Denny Christian of Wilmington, NC, Deb Holm (Kevin) Springfield, MO, and Diann Hovey (Chuck) of Carroll; four step-children: Barry Andersen of Des Moines, Terry Andersen (Carrie) of Earlham, Sherry Lockhart (Dave) of Ankeny, and Jerri Reisberg (Randy) of Carroll; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great, great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Dorothy Nelson (Don) of Avoca; brother-in-law Donald Andersen (Janice) of Audubon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty was preceded in death by her parents George and Ruthie Boone; two brothers: Melvin and Marvin Boone; and her sister Ethel Johnson (Dean).
