R. Merriam, Sr. Died Monday

R. W. Merriam, Sr., 82, died at the home of his son, Robert Jr., in Chicago, Sunday, April 30. The remains were taken to Des Moines where burial took place this afternoon at the Harbach funeral home. Interment will be in the Des Moines Masonic cemetery.

Early Resident
Mr. Merriam was born near Hiawatha, Canada, Aug. 13, 1851. He came to Iowa in 1865, living and working in Manchester and Cherokee before coming to Eagle Grove, where he operated a harness shop until about 10 years ago. He is survived by his wife and one son, Robert. It was Mr. Merriam who suggested "the" name - for this newspaper when it was started by L. J. Butterfield in February, 1895. Mr. Butterfield was asking for suggestions and Mr. Merriam told him to call the new paper the "Eagle Grove Eagle" which he did. The sympathy of the many friends of the family is extended the surviving relatives.
