Lester LaVern Nicholl was born on March 14, 1937, in Webster City, Iowa, to James A. and Myrtle E. Staley Nicholl. He was educated in the Webster City Schools. He entered the United States Navy in 1954. He was united in marriage to Sandra Jean McVicker on March 30, 1958, in Webster City. She preceded him in death on April 26, 1991. He retired from the US Navy in 1974, after 20 1/2 years of service. He and his family then moved to Eagle Grove, where he worked as a diesel mechanic for various trucking companies such as Boone Valley, Ellsworth, Royster, and eleven years with Umthun. On October 15, 1994, he was united in marriage to Shirley Carter in Eagle Grove. He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Eagle Grove.

Lester L. Nicholl died Sunday, May 3, 1998, in Idaho Springs, Colo, at the age of 61. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; five daughters, Keni Vrataric, and her husband, Joe, Victorville, Calif., Leslie Byers, and her husband, Steve, Omaha, Neb., Stacey Clubine, and her husband, David, Gladbrook, Karen Vinsand, Fort Dodge, and Sherry Glover, and her husband, Scott, Fort Dodge; two sons, David, and his wife, Teresa, San Diego, Calif., and Leo Johnson, Fort Dodge; 17 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and one brother, James Nicholl, and his wife, Vickie, Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sandra Jean; a brother, David; and a sister, Emma.

Services were held on Thursday, May 7, 1998, at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with Pastor Jean Ross of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fort Dodge officiating. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
