Funeral services for Ellis Markham were held from Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond on Saturday afternoon, June 23, 1979 at two o'clock. Rev. Norman Deugan officiated and military rites were given at Graceland Cemetery in Rowan by the Rowan American Legion. The Eyler-Willim Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of the arrangements. Casket bearers were Dean, Steven and Leonard Davis, Michael Leist, Jay Anderberg and Ronnie Kallal. Honorary bearers were Ronnie and Gary Markham, Gary Walters, Randall Ward and Kenneth Erickson. Special music was by Phillip Hoyt with Mrs. Norman Deugan at the piano and Mrs. Morris Peterson at the organ.
Ellis Markham was born on November 15, 1889 at Wooton, Lincolnshire, England and was the son of William and Mary Markham. He died on June 20, 1979 at the Belmond Hospital. In 1913 he came to this country from England and settled in the Alexander area. He attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. During World War #l he served with the Army in France. In 1920 he was married to Lizzie Carter in England and they came to the USA, where they farmed in the Alexander-Meservey area. Mrs. Markham died in 1962 and he moved to Rowan where he lived until entering the Belmond Nursing Home a year ago.
Five children survive. They are Mrs. Richard (Eleanor) Larick of Joyce, Donald of Belmond, Fredrick of Clarion, Mrs. George (Gladys) Leist of Rochester, Minn, and Mrs. Maurine Peters of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a brother, Harry of Boone. His parents, three brothers, one sister and a grandson preceded him in death. Mr. Markham was a member of the Rowan Congregational Church and a 50 year member of the Rowan American Legion.
