CHARLES L. BENT, FORMER CLARIONITE, DIES

Charles L. Bent, 87, died after seemingly recovered from the effects of surgery in the Veterans Hospital in Coral Gables, Fla. Born at Cambridge, Mass., he graduated from West Point and was a commissioned major in the Spanish-American war, the Philippine uprising, and in World War I. He resigned his commission and came to Clarion in 1920. He worked as a claim agent for the Chicago Great Western railroad until he retired. In 1957 he left Clarion with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Brozik for Fort Lauderdale. Fla., He underwent surgery at the veterans hospital and appeared to be well on the road to recovery when he suddenly died. Services were held at the Eyler Funeral Home at 2 p. m., Wednesday afternoon. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Brozik of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren: Mrs. Wm. Sandmaier of Clarion, Dennis C. Bell, Hampton and four great grandchildren.

BIO: Charles was a son of Charles R and Antoinette Spare Bent. He was appointed to the West Point Military Academy in 1890 and was serving on temporary duty in 1895-1896 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company W, 1st Infantry, San Diego Barracks, San Diego, CA, under the command of Major Thomas M. K. Smith. In 1903, he was serving in the Philippine Islands as a Captain under the command of Col. William P. Rogers.

Charles ultimately attained the rank of Major and, according to the U.S. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963, he served during World War 1 with the 320th Inf, 80th Division, from April 23, 1917 until his honorable discharge on June 27, 1919.

He married Constance Hickman, daughter of William H. and Alicia Knott Hickman, who predeceased him. They had one child, Constance Alicia. In the 1940 US Census, Charles was listed as widowed, living at 322 First Avenue SW, Clarion, Iowa with his daughter.

Charles died in Florida in 1958. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion, Wright County, Iowa and his grave was marked with a marble headstone ordered by Mr. Oscar B. Rice.
