Mary Lea Schaeffer, 77, of Eagle Grove, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, from 5-7 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the Eagle Grove United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mary Lea Schaeffer was born September 2, 1926 in Woolstock Township, Wright County, the daughter of Frank S. and Ollie May (Moseley) Nelson. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1944. On July 12, 1945 she married Verne H "Bud" Schaeffer in Denver, Colorado. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1985. They lived in Glenwood, Fort Dodge, Torrington, Wyoming, and moved to Eagle Grove in 1963. Mary worked as a nurse's aide at Mercy-Trinity Hospital from 1974 to 1992 and as the Senior Citizens Coordinator for a few years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove where she was very active in the early years of her membership. She also had many hobbies such as stamping, creating cards on the computer, and making dollhouses. Mary was also a talented country painter, woodworker, and enjoyed all types of needlework.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Schaeffer and his wife, Mary, of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Marlys Connallon and her husband, Peter, of Indianapolis, Ind., Rene Kromray and her husband, Eugene, of Ottumwa, and Scott Schaeffer and his wife, LaVonne, of Eagle Grove, six grandchildren, two sisters, Margaret Louberto of Des Moines and Vesta May Anderson of Renwick, a brother, Clifford Nelson, of Eagle Grove, a sister-in-law Eunice Nelson of Eagle Grove and a niece Ione Caquelin of Duncombe. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Verne, four sisters: Viola Nelson, Nell Butterfield, Stella Pauline Orr and Ione Nelson, and two brothers John and Eddy Nelson. The Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove is in charge of the arrangements.
