March 21, 1905 --- June 29, 1995

Hazel Y. Miller Ballou Haupt died Thursday, June 29, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, following a sudden massive stroke. She had been a resident at the Rotary Ann Care Center in Eagle Grove since 1990. Memorial services were held Monday, July 3, at 11 a.m. from Clarion United Presbyterian Church and Pastor Stuart Brantley officiated. Burial of the cremains was in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Haupt was born March 21, 1905, to Lida and William E. Miller of Clarion. She attended Clarion Public Schools, grades 1 - 12 and graduated in 1923. Several years later, she took secretarial training at Fort Dodge Business College. On June 7, 1924, she was married to Kenneth Edwin Ballou of Rowan. The couple had two children. On May 1, 1955, she and Irving Haupt of Klemme were married at the Clarion Presbyterian Church. They lived on a farm near Klemme and wintered in Texas, where he died on April 14, 1964. Hazel was employed at the Wright County Court House and later became a legal secretary for Birdsall, Archard, Nagle, McGrath & Draheim. For many years she was called upon to take testimony and depositions in shorthand at crime scenes, day or night. In October, 1943, she joined the Women's Army Corps. She served in the South Pacific, New Guinea and the Philippines. She was discharged with Honors in 1946.

She was a lifelong member of the Clarion United Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and served as a trustee. She also was active in Royal Neighbors, Wright County Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary and Rebecca Lodge.

Preceding her in death are her parents and an infant sister. Surviving are her two sons and their families: Dr. Philip Edwin Ballou and his wife Dr. Mim Tesdahl Ballou, Marco Island, Florida; Stephen Ballou and Rose Ann Vasquez of Des Moines; Mr. Stuart Lynn Ballou, and wife Mollie Shillito of Florissant, Missouri; Douglas of Dallas, Texas and Brian and his wife Cathy of St. Louis and their children Lyndsey 8, and Matthew 2.
