Carolyn Smith was born April 25, 1908, in Monroe, Iowa, to Katherine Fessler and Frank Lemoyne Smith, M.D. She graduated from Grinnell College, Grinnell, in 1929. She was united in marriage November 29, 1929, to Maurice Brownell Crabbe. They made their home in Eagle Grove where Maurice became editor/publisher of the Eagle Grove EAGLE. They spent summers at their lake home on Big Mantrap Lake in northern Minnesota since 1959. She was active in and a lifelong member of the Congregational/United Church of Christ. She was an active worker and member of the Board of the Eagle Grove Memorial Library, Equality Club, the American Association of University Women, and Bookworms. For several decades she wrote the "Memories...l0, 20, 30, 40 Years Ago" column for the Eagle Grove EAGLE.
Carolyn Smith Crabbe died of cancer at home in Eagle Grove on Friday, July 11, 1997, at the age of 89. Survivors include her children, Margery Crabbe Stell of Iowa City, and James Maurice Crabbe and wife, Anne Elizabeth, of Pinehurst, N. C.; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Carolyn Hemingway, Katherine Elizabeth Stell, Suzanne Marie Dinger, Michael John Stell, James Brownell Crabbe, Carolyn Jean Ericson, and Elizabeth Ann Debrowski; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Margery Smith Cooper; and her husband, Maurice.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 14, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Congregational/United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
