April 26, 1948 --- October 18, 2016
Jack William Stone, age 68, of Poynette, Wisconsin, passed away at home, on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. He was born in Colby, Kansas on April 26, 1948 the son of late Raymond and Marcella (Cibert) Stone. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Kay Caldwell, on August 9, 1969. Jack lived his early childhood years in Eagle Grove, Iowa and showed exceptional athletic ability from an early age on. After his family's move to Berlin, Wisconsin in 1958, he began his extremely successful athletic career at Berlin High School, graduating in 1966. An outstanding athlete in football and track, Jack grew to statewide fame as a wrestler under the coaching of his father, Ray Stone. "Applejack" was a four time state qualifier and placed second in state as a sophomore and won a state championship in both his junior and senior years. Jack earned the honor of being appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in 1966 and continued his education at the University of Wyoming and The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where he graduated with a degree in teaching. In 1972, Jack was injured in an automobile accident which left him a paraplegic. In typical "AppleJack" style, he met this challenge as an opponent to be "outscored" rather than a setback. Jack held multiple positions with the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Milwaukee Branch including Service Officer, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the PVA, and traveling thousands of airplane miles representing the Milwaukee Branch.
Jack will be remembered as a teaser, a quick wit, and a competitor who took the gifts and opportunities life gave him to become a person his friends admired and a teammate they held in great esteem.
Jack is survived by his son, Michael Stone of Milwaukee, WI; grandson, Maxwell Raymond of Milwaukee, WI and sisters, Susan (Steve) Olson of Madison, WI and Karen (Duaine) Radtke of Montello, WI as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Marcella Stone and brother-in-law, Duaine Radtke.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday, October 27, 2016 at DEKORRA LUTHERAN CHURCH, Poynette, Wisconsin with Reverend Ryan Rouse presiding. Burial with Military Honors will be held in Dekorra Lutheran Cemetery. A lunch will follow. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Paralyzed Veterans of America WI Chapter.
