C. A. LEE DIED ON THURSDAY DECEMBER 5
Funeral Held Saturday for Retired Railroad Conductor Who Was Bedridden 16 MonthsMr. Clark A. Lee died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. C. Hathaway on West Broadway, Thursday, December 5, 1946. He was taken ill in July of 1945 and has been confined to his bed for the past sixteen months. Mr. Lee was born February 8, 1858 at Warren, Ohio. When thirteen years old, moved with his parents to Michigan. While there he was married to Cornelia Skinner, August 14, 1876. To this union were born three children, Vernon, Maude and Jessie. With their first little babe and Mrs. Lee's parents they, came to Iowa in a covered wagon in 1878, locating on farms they purchased south of Farnhamville, Iowa. Mr. Lee recalled the time when he worked with his team of horses to put in the railroad grade east of Farmhamville, also as being the first sales clerk in the town. He afterwards managed this store.
In 1890 he and family came to Jewell engaging in the grain business, also stock buying. In 1895 he
moved here to Eagle Grove where he began his work for the C.N.W. Railroad Company, working as a
brakeman until 1905 when he was promoted to conductor, serving as conductor until February 8, 1928 retiring at the age of 70 years. With his kind and happy disposition, he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a faithful and consistent Christian, a member of the Congregational faith from early childhood, and a lover of music, participating in both band and orchestra work.Mr. Lee leaves to mourn his death his two daughters, Mrs. Maude Hathaway and Mrs. Jessie Foll of Eagle Grove, Iowa. Also the following grandchildren and great grandchildren: Mr. Lee Foll, production manager of Cole's Commercial Advertising agency of Des Moines and son Gary, Mrs. Orin Emerson and two children, Mary Lynne and Raymond Lee of Eagle Grove and Mr. Clayton Hathaway, vocal music instructor in the Fort Dodge high school and junior college. Also one brother, Austin Lee of Barryton, Michigan. His wife preceded him in death December 27, 1940, also a son Vernon, January 6, 1897. Thus closes a life full of loving service. For over four score years he has labored in life's vineyard. He has sewed, he has reaped, he has gleaned. His harvest has been completed. His work is done, his tasks are ended and dropping his mantle of life in the vestibule of Eternity be has stepped within, where loved ones waited his coming, where all is bright with music and celestial bliss, and for him now comes the fruition and reward for his labors.
Funeral services were held at the Wilson's Chapel on December 7, 1946, with Rev. Walter Ross officiating, assisted by Rev. Albert S. Kilbourn of Denmark and interment was made in the Rose Hill cemetery. Frank C. Wells sang two solos and was accompanied by Mrs. Ollie Johnson. Relatives attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Foll and son Gary of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Hathaway Ft. Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Long of Algona, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Long of Algona, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Long of Algona, Mrs. Pete Plemel of Burt, Mr. Earl Skinner of Farnhamville, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Skinner of Farnhamville, Mrs. Perry Swearinger and daughter Leona of Farnhamville.
