Orin Newton Emerson was born in Eagle Grove, April 5,1914. He attended the Eagle Grove schools and graduated with the high school class of 1932. He went to Eagle Grove Junior College and graduated from the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine.

He married Marjorie Lois Foll in 1941. After setting up a veterinary practice in Eagle Grove in 1940, he was joined by his brother, Wayne, in 1949 and later by his nephew, Ron, in 1976. He continued practicing with them until his retirement in 1982.

He served on the Eagle Grove school board from 1953 to 1966 and from 1966 to 1989 he served on the Iowa Central Community College board. He was instrumental in school reorganization efforts during the 1960's and in establishing the present Iowa Community College system.

He was a member of the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the White Shrine, and the El Kahir Shriners. He was a life member of the Iowa and the American Veterinary Medical Associations, a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Savings Bank of Vincent; a member of the Society of the Gentle Doctor; a charter member of the Order of the Knoll; and a past president of the Wright County Fair Board. Other honors include the Stange Award, the most prestigious veterinary alumni award, and ACCT Region Trustee Leadership Award. He was a member of Phi Zeta Veterinary Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Orin N. Emerson, 77, died March 11, 1992, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Mason City after a short illness, He was preceded in death by his wife; a stillborn daughter, Linda Sue; his father, Clarence; and a brother, Gerald. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Lynne, Atlantic; and his son, Raymond of Mason City; his mother, Nellie of Eagle Grove; two brothers, Wayne, Eagle Grove, and Dale of Ottumwa; a sister, Joan Whitmer of Wilton; five grandchildren; five nieces and four nephews.

Private funeral services and burial were held Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m. at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. A Memorial service was conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott C. Hall officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
