September 4, 1929 ---- April 14, 2013

Doris I. Schreck, 83, of rural Hampton, Iowa passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, April 14 at her home. Doris was born on September 4, 1929 to Andrew and Hannah (Clausen) Blom and grew up on their farm south of Coulter. Doris attended country school, then graduated from Hampton High School in 1947, after which she attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Gerald P. Schreck on November 21, 1948, in Coulter, Iowa. Doris and Jerry farmed near Rowan until 1953, at which time they moved to their farm southwest of Hampton, where they continued to live until their respective deaths. Their son Bill and his son Josh continue to farm this land. Doris took great pride in being a farmer's wife and she did it well, working side by side with Jerry, whether that be feeding cattle, tilling the soil, or taking care of home and family. She could drive a tractor as well as most, and, in spite of her sore knees, continued to ride a few rounds in the combine each day during the harvest - her favorite time of the year. She loved the farm and her car or pickup could be seen at some point nearly every day driving the country roads, checking the crops. Doris and Jerry had a long and happy life together spent mostly on the farm, but also at their cabin on Gull Lake in Minnesota, and for many years after their retirement at their winter home in the Rio Grande Valley near Mercedes, Texas. Wherever they went, they had many friends and the stories of their lives are rich and interesting. Family was very important to Doris and she was a loving and patient wife and mother, a warm and encouraging grandmother, and a thoughtful and caring daughter, aunt, cousin, and friend. Doris was a long-time member of several organizations, including St. John's Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son William (Deb) Schreck of Hampton, daughter Wendy (Greg) Dunn of Cedar Rapids, grandson Josh (Jen) Schreck of Hampton, granddaughter Whitney (Eliot) Weiner of Chicago, Illinois, and grandson Robert Dunn of Cedar Rapids. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, Jerry, and her sister and brother-in-law, Marien and Harvey Pierce. Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church or the Windsor Theater Foundation. Burial at the Rowan Cemetery in Rowan, Iowa.
