Services held for Dr. Michael Abrams, Director of Combined Medical Specialties at Broadlawns
Michael E. Abrams, 57, director of Combined Medical Specialties at Braodlawns Medical Center, Des Moines, and a leader in the fight against illegal drugs, died of a heart attack Monday, January 4, 1999 at his home in Urbandale.
Dr. Abrams was born June 21, 1941 in Chapin and attended Goldfield and Eagle Grove schools graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1959. Abrams graduated from Luther College with a B.A. in 1963; University of Iowa Medical School with a M.D. in 1967 and did his rotating internship at the University of California in 1968. He completed his G.P. residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in 1970. He was certified A. A. F. P. 1975-2000; A.A.F.P. Relection 1987-1994; certified in 1988 with American Society of Addiction Medicine and in 1991 with American Academy of Pain Management. Abrams also served in the U.S. Army as a Major, officer in charge.
He was married to Nina Torkelson of Thor. She died in October of 1979. In 1980 he wed Mary Kelso. He had lived in the Des Moines area for the past 30 years. Among his many positions, he recently served as president of the Neurobiobehavioral Institute for Research, and Training at Broadlawns Hospital and was the former president of Polk County Medical Society. He also had taught at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. In addition he was a medical adviser for the Polk County Sexual Assault and Violent Crime Center, a physician reviewer with the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care and an adviser for the Governor's Drug Alliance, "Methademic in Iowa."
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons, Landis of Phoenix, Thad of Iowa City and Cory of Urbandale; two daughters, Vanessa (Mrs. Steve) Ary of Garrison and Larissa Abrams of Urbandale; his mother, Mabel Mildred Abrams of Gladbrook; a sister, Bonnie Davis of Liscomb; two brothers, Lloyd Jr. of Mason City, and Donald of Prior Lake, Minn.; and a grandchild.
Funeral services for Dr. Abrams were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Private family graveside services were at McDivitt Grove Cemetery.
